      Why do similar flights have different carbon footprints?

      The most common reason is some planes are more fuel efficient than others. The less fuel a plane needs to get from A to B, the smaller the carbon footprint. However there are other factors too, such as seat layouts, the distance flown, how much Sustainable Aviation Fuel they use — the list goes on.

      Frequently asked questions

      How do you measure the carbon footprint of flights?

      We currently use the Google Travel Impact Model (TIM), more information can be found here. However, we include one large difference. The Google Travel Impact Model does not include the effects of radiative forcing, we therefore follow advice from DEFRA and increase all flight emissions by 1.7 to make sure we are not underestimating the full impacts of flying.

      How accurate is this method?

      Ideally a pilot would tell you how much fuel was used after each flight. But they don’t, so this is currently considered the best method until a time when airlines are a bit more transparent.

      Why does my carbon footprint change depending on the cabin class I travel in?

      We work out how much fuel is used by the whole plane during your journey. We then divide this fuel use per passenger. A business class passenger takes up more space on the plane and therefore more of the emissions get assigned to those tickets.

      Should I offset my flight emissions?

      Finally an interesting question! Reducing your footprint rather than offsetting is far more impactful. Hence why we built this tool — we want you to pick the lowest carbon flight between A and B (assuming trains, buses, electric cars and the humble bicycle are all not viable options).
